| Description | As death and 'death spectacle' continue to be recurrent motifs in contemporary popular culture, there is an increasing need to examine what makes the corpse a commodity of visual entertainment and consumption. This chapter explores the aesthetics involved in the popular cultural representations of the dead. Can the corpse be seen as a work of art? How does aesthetic distancing help the audience engage with the constructedness of an onscreen corpse? How does aesthetic distancing effect morbid voyeurism? Can the aesthetically choreographed representations of the corpse help redefine/reconstruct social narratives centering on death and the dead? With close reference to select episodes from popular TV shows such as Hannibal, The Fall, and Six Feet Under, the chapter deliberates on such questions and attempts to understand the manner in which the corpse has emerged as an object of desire. The chapter, therefore, analyzes the blurring boundaries between aesthetic appreciation and voyeurism from a thanatologic standpoint. Book Name: Death in Contemporary Popular Culture |
