| Description | The 'structured framework' approach tends to use various audit tools, to inform the 'gap analysis' and subsequent pan-university strategy. The 'art', then, of leading and managing change in higher education is being taken much more seriously. Part of this 'art' is to consider the appropriate infrastructure for the change process, that is value adding processes, rigorous underpinning systems, and performance management metrics. Leadership is obviously crucial, with a range of views as to its importance at different stages of the change. The fundamental purpose of leadership, in addition to providing a vision of what success further to the change would look like, is to deal with the dynamics of change. Mapping where an organisation is against these two axes provides a useful tool in considering in which quadrant an organisation operates, versus the quadrant in which they perceive they need to operate to be successful.
