| Description | In this chapter, we examine how early childhood curriculum became a policy issue for policymakers in the United States. We do so by providing a brief history of the evolution of policymakers' focus on early childhood education from the 1800s to today. Then, we investigate how policymakers' standards-based accountability reforms affect teachers' practice and briefly examine who curricular policies serve and what knowledge policymakers deem being most worthy. We end this chapter by discussing how the impact of policy on curriculum affects those who work within the field of early childhood education, whether that work happens with children on a day-to-day basis, with teachers in professional development trainings or workshops, or if that work is early education research, and we consider the future directions of curriculum in early childhood education.
