| Description | This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines how viewers' habits and expectations are studied, anticipated, and subverted in contemporary art, so as to prompt critical inquiry into the limits and possibilities of perception, representation, and agency. By explicitly linking the phenomenology of perception to agency, two significant aspects of aesthetic experience emerge. The first is that it establishes agency as embodied and situated, and not necessarily human in nature; and second, that it encourages us to inquire after the ethical dimensions of being subject to or of contemporary art. The book outlines a historical trajectory of changes in art reception, starting with the expanded field of minimalist objects and Light and Space environments and culminating with a more systemic understanding of the complex relations between human and non-human actants operating in aesthetic fields defined by contemporary artists.
