| Description | The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #10 aims to reduce inequality within and among countries, offering countries various targets to work towards. This goal (and other SDGs which focus on human well-being) have been criticized for not adequately considering the biophysical implications of the economic growth implied in addressing inequality. This chapter argues for a more holistic and integrated approach to achieving the SDGs; pointing to strategies, targets, and policies that simultaneously work towards human equality within the boundaries of the Earth's limits. The chapter also investigates the ways in which achieving equality need not be dependent on increased energy and material throughput of economies, but rather through redistribution within and among nations. By being explicit about the synergies as well as the conflicts inherent in tackling inequality within planetary boundaries, we lay the groundwork for guiding more holistic and effective decision- and policy-making for actively addressing inequality in diverse global contexts.
