| Description | Gender is a primary social determinant of health status and outcomes, but health and illness researchers are not always adequately educated regarding the theories, methods, and concepts necessary for a comprehensive gender analysis. Health inequities exist between genders, race, class, and location. Gender and sexuality studies, a constantly evolving field, integrates the interdisciplinary contributions of queer theory and transgender studies. Utilising a gender studies perspective, this chapter defines key terminology (transgender, cisgender, gender non-conforming), highlights emergent methods and theories (entanglement, interconnectedness), and joins the call for a postcolonial perspective in understanding the current climate crisis. Incorporating this contemporary perspective can assist in accounting for the health disparities that exist in and between the Global North and Global South.
