| Description | Understanding and conceptualizing tourist experiences has been a key research issue since the 1960s (Uriely 2005). Even after more than 40 years, the nature of contemporary tourist experiences continues to be an important research focus amongst tourism researchers. Examples of such work can be found in Ryan (2002) and Sharpley and Stone (2010). Today the focus of research into tourists' expectations and experiences largely examines and explores the concept of postmodern (or post-mass) tourism (Uriely 2005) and responses to transformations in the dynamic socio-cultural world of tourism (Sharpley and Stone 2010). One area where this has particular resonance has been in world of heritage tourism. Studies into visitor experiences and expectations at cultural heritage settings have been a key research focus in heritage tourism studies since the early 1990s. In many cases, this has focused on improving the understanding of tourists' experiences, motivations and expectations, for example, in early studies such as Pocock (1992), Parrinello (1993) and Light (1995a) and more recently in Poria et al. (2006a, 2006b), Mason and Kuo (2008), de Rojas and Camarero (2008), and Chen and Chen (2010). In addition to this, the nature of the interpretation provided plays a key role in the tourist experience of heritage sites (Poria et al. 2006a, 2009) and can contribute to a memorable experience (Gilmore et al. 2007). Gilmore et al. (2007) further state that interpretation affects the satisfaction derived from a visit by adding value and meaning thereby helping visitors appreciate the site. Interpretation can also be a tool to attract visitors to a site especially if there is competition between sites and tourist attractions (Poria 2010).
