| Description | This chapter explores dimensions of the global neo-liberal political economy that explain the genocidal and ecocidal climate injustice, and examines the role of Indigenous peoples in identifying an alternative paradigm whereby humankind could live with nature instead of conflict with it. Across the Earth, Indigenous and place-based peoples sustain the health and biodiversity of ecosystems in their capacity as stewards of nature in the service of Mother Earth. The Earth's climate has altered because anthropogenic (human-caused) carbon dioxide concentrations have shot from the 280 parts per million (ppm.) of pre-industrial times (the holocene) to 500 ppm. in the anthropocene. In the neo-liberal world, where everything is up for commodification, markets and not states are now central mechanisms of governance. This has generated a catastrophic democratic deficit and participation gap for those most affected by change and economic and ecological mis-governance. Climate governance under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) did not start off based on market mechanisms. Book Name: Handbook of Indigenous Peoples' Rights |
