| Description | So far, we have discussed wavelets abstractly through their properties. The question that naturally arises is whether it is possible to systematically construct wavelet bases with certain desired properties. In this chapter, we will discuss an important method of construction of wavelets of arbitrary smoothness. As we have noted before, there is quite a bit of freedom that we may exercise in choosing the wavelet function generating a wavelet basis. Therefore, the specific choice and the method of construction of a wavelet function depends on the requirements and motivation for its construction. We first explore a rich arsenal of functions giving rise to wavelets, namely spline functions. Next, we take a signal processing perspective and study the fast wavelet algorithm discussed in the previous chapter from this point of view. We then construct two important classes of compactly supported wavelet bases, namely the compactly supported orthonormal and the biorthogonal wavelet bases. These wavelet bases give rise to FIR and linear phase FIR subband filtering schemes, respectively. We obtain characterizations of such subband filtering schemes arising from these wavelet bases.
