| Description | The Institute of Languages building at University of New South Wales was developed in 1999 as a key component to reinvigorate the University's Randwick campus as part of a masterplan. The immediate need was for an intensive languages school primarily for international students, for whom this building would be their first encounter with the University. Building layout, construction, and passive environmental control systems Conceived as a gateway building, the final form of the Institute of Languages rises to three floors and is essentially a simple, efficient arrangement of a series of 6m square classrooms to the north and south of a central corridor, with an entry foyer to its west. The building is located in Sydney, Australia, which has 1 percent design temperatures of 6.8 and 29.5°C respectively, in winter and summer. The site selected was located at the entrance of the Randwick campus which allows the building to be oriented with its long axis running east west. Book Name: Sustainable Buildings in Practice |
