| Description | Trade in goods represents the basic core of economic cooperation in ASEAN. The ASEAN Member States established the ASEAN Preferential Trading Arrangement in 1977 (ASEAN $PTA),^{1}$ with related economic cooperation schemes set up in the early 1980s, all related to trade in goods. These agreements ultimately led to the Agreement on Agreement on the Common Effective Preferential Tariff (CEPT) Scheme for the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) in $1992^{2}$ and the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) in $2010.^{3}$ Without these agreements focusing on trade in goods, there would be no other ASEAN economic agreements on services and investment: there would be no ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).
