| Description | This chapter examines spatial knowledge acquisition and representation: specifically, the role played by individual cognitive abilities in this process. This study is carried out in a broader context of examining the external (environment) and internal (cognitive) factors which influence spatial knowledge acquisition and representation. Many factors may influence spatial knowledge acquisition and representation. Three general types of factors may include internal 'cognitive' factors, external 'environmental' factors and the medium in which the environment is presented. The chapter examines one aspect of cognitive factors, mainly spatial abilities, however, a general review is provided to place this research in a broader theoretical framework. Internal or human cognitive factors include individual cognitive abilities, central information-processing capacity, perceptual or sensory limitations and attitudes. Spatial abilities may be subdivided into two distinct categories: spatial orientation and spatial visualisation. Visual memory plays in the acquisition and representation of geographic space. Encoding the location of landmarks is one of the principal steps in the cognitive mapping process. Book Name: Geographic Information Research |
