| Description | This chapter investigates non-verbal musical interaction. It will detail the evolution of group improvisation on a fourteen-date tour (2016), where I performed a self-composed suite of original music alongside expert jazz musicians George Colligan (piano), Jon Irabagon (saxophone) and Michael Janisch (bass), giving a unique musical perspective from within the ensemble. This study builds upon Frederick Seddon's (2005) research into the modes of communication during jazz improvisation, applying Rosyln Arnold's (2005) Empathic Intelligence pedagogical model onto a template aiming to observe improvisation by university-level musicians and measure their attempts to cultivate musical attunement. Here, I apply a similar methodology using expert musicians, hoping to better enact musical attunement and its resulting empathic creativity. Examining the inherent dynamic between embedded and enacted knowledge in live performance, this chapter will show how composition can be used to enrich group improvisation and evidence the importance of allowing music the space to develop in consecutive performances.
