| Description | As the city expands its commercial, industrial and residential area into its periphery, the land use transforms and becomes more complex over time. Transformation of agricultural land into urban land uses is a common phenomenon around cities, with land which is adjacent to the city boundary undergoing conversion at a particularly fast pace. Chandigarh, being the capital of two states and acting as a growth pole in the northern states of India, has witnessed a large-scale rural land transformation over the past four decades. The present paper investigates the rural land transformation in Chandigarh's periphery, using measures obtained from the classified satellite images for the past forty years in order to gauge the extent and intensity of land transformation in the rural area, the division of land use and land cover for the study area in the past/present, changes in land use and land cover, trends of urban built-up area expansion and patterns of change, growth and the urban sphere of influence of Chandigarh city on its surrounding periphery.
