| Description | This chapter explores the story of Pennsylvania's deindustrialization and of the State government's policy responses to promote growth. The State of Pennsylvania, one of the 13 original colonies that seceded from Great Britain, played a pivotal role in the industrialization of the USA. From the colonial period to the industrial age, Philadelphia, the State's largest city, was a financial and commercial centre for an expanding nation. The continued westward expansion of the country dispersed the manufacturing activity concentrated in Pennsylvania and other northeast States. From 1950 to 1990, the civilian labour force in the USA more than doubled and the country's manufacturing employment increased by nearly 40 per cent. Pennsylvania lagged behind these national trends. Its civilian labour force grew much more slowly and by 1990 was only 39 per cent larger than it had been in 1950, thus becoming a smaller and smaller share of the nation's labour force.
