| Description | This chapter explores the issues in preventing alcohol and other drug abuse among Hispanic/Latino families, and issues of behavior problems among Hispanic/Latino youth. A culturally specific intervention for families with children at risk for substance abuse was implemented by Proyecto Juventud, a community-based family services program located in the rural southwestern United States. This intervention, incorporating culturally appropriate language, beliefs, values, and principles, provided substance abuse education to families. Research on Latino parental influences consistently points to the critical role that the attitudes and behaviors of parents play in predicting early use of substances by their children. The main idea underlying a culturally sensitive intervention is that adolescents from different ethnic backgrounds are exposed to a different set of risk factors, requiring culturally relevant methodologies and programs. The family intervention was part of a larger program, which included an intervention for youth. Book Name: Substance Abusing Latinos |
