| Description | [ Holistic Education has a long history. Indigenous peoples with their view of life as interdependent and sacred can be seen as the first holistic educators. The period that is called the Axial age was a time when great teachers such as Lao Tse, Buddha, Confucius, and Socrates emphasized the importance of compassion, which is central to holistic education. In the eighteenth century, Rousseau, Froebel, and Pestalozzi focused on the goodness and wholeness of children and how these qualities could be developed in educational settings. The pedagogies of Transcendentalists (e.g., Thoreau, Alcott) in the nineteenth century can be viewed holistically. The twentieth century gave birth to Waldorf education and Montessori education. Holistic education as a term and movement came into being in the 1980s with the publication of The Holistic Education Review and The Holistic Curriculum.]The term "holistic education" arose during the 1980s. In 1988 the Holistic Education Review began and The Holistic Curriculum was published. Ron Miller founding editor of the Holistic Education Review defined holistic education in the issue of the review. Indigenous peoples were the first holistic educators. They saw the interconnectedness of life that is referred to as the "web of life". Education in the Axial age focused on textual study and engaging in spiritual practices. Armstrong writes: In India, education was never simply a matter of acquiring factual information. Rousseau wrote Emile, which was published in 1762 and described his approach to education. Rousseau advocated a natural approach to child-rearing as he believed the natural soul of the child was good and must be protected from civilization.
