| Description | A literacy-rich environment of exciting stories, scripts, characters and plots provide a shared context for children to use and adapt for their own play scenarios. Stories enrich play but play also encircles storytelling as children accumulate a bank of draft scripts, plots and characters which they can use in their story making. The children spontaneously moved the resources between areas. They sometimes dressed up as characters as they played with the small-world props or they dressed up as the characters and took their play into the wooden block area or outdoors. This allowed children to stay in character and play out their own scenarios. Play offers opportunities to explore inner feelings in relation to experiences and to be in control of the play, to be able to experiment with situations, rearrange them and create alternatives, important features of free-flow play.
