| Description | The stage has now been reached where the cognitive paradigms suggested by the neuropsychological data can be applied to form the basis for a new theory of aesthetic response. To the best of my knowledge no other aesthetic theories have been developed by drawing conclusions from neuropsychology, a comparatively recent development in the cognitive sciences, although phenomenological and psychological theories do, of course, have a substantial $history.^{1}$ This does not mean that my theory bears no relation to or has not benefited from other more traditional theories and, to emphasize this point, chapter 8 is dedicated to comparing my views with those of others.
