| Description | The chapter will present a model of Dance Movement Therapy for the treatment and support of children and adolescents. Therapy for children and adolescents has to consider specific developmental themes and issues as well as the systemic context in which they occur. Dance as socio-cultural activity models this structure in the individual's movement engagement embedded in a shared corporeal practice. During the movement interactions in dance duets and group dances, movers are participating in the shared experience while they also contribute to each other's social environment. Current research has shown that already from before birth the rhythms and tension of the shared maternal body deeply influence the functioning of a child's organism and a child's development of interpersonal relating. Non-verbal attunement through rhythmic or postural synchronisation occurs in interpersonal interactions throughout life. In applying dance-informed practices to therapy, DMT like no other discipline addresses sensorimotor organisation within meaningful movement experiences and rhythmic, expressive and aesthetic structures within an intersubjective engagement. Combining concepts from DMT with findings from neuropsychology and developmental psychology, the chapter will offer a developmental aesthetic perspective to therapy with children, adolescents and their caregivers.
