| Description | This chapter explores shift related to democracy in formal education and proposes five ways of thinking about what commoning schools could mean in order to couple democracy and education again. The first two ways are understand schools as places of debate and dispute and consider students, teachers and families not as consumers, leaders or 'test performers', but rather as citizens who take part in the decisions. The last three ways are focus commoning on 'micro-politics' related to the (self) government and the power relationships in everyday life; analyse how schools produce democratic subjectivities; and understand schools as a common project produced by actors' democratic cooperation. According to the World Values Survey, people under the age of 30 value democracy less than older citizens do, and according to the historical series of this survey, as time passes, young people value less the importance of living in democracy.
