| Description | The Islamic revolution in Iran was a unique event for both the Western and non–Western world. The family is considered as the fundamental unit in an Islamic society and women are considered as 'the pillars of the nation', as 'strong forts of virtue and chastity' and 'raising brave and enlightened men and weak and united women'. The education of youth by women should, as stated earlier, be along Islamic lines. The Ulema themselves were influenced by them and had interpreted Islam in a manner which maintained and reinforced the patriarchal–feudal structures in which women were placed under the control and domination of males. An analysis of the socio–economic status of Iranian women done by the National Union of Women considered that the plight of women was a result of the dominant mode of production and its cultural and supra–structural effects on Iranian society, in particular, on women.
