| Description | In most states, felony charges are adjudicated in county or circuit courts of general jurisdiction. But court structures that process misdemeanor charges vary widely across and within states. In this chapter, limited jurisdiction courts in rural communities are investigated, examining what is known, and unknown, about the communities in which they function, the people who staff them, and the practices that they adopt. Then, the implications of these practices for the people who find themselves in rural courts are considered. While these rural courts appear to many people to be vestiges of historical decisions and practices, no longer needed today, it is in fact unlikely that they will be replaced in the near future by new structures, so the chapter concludes with consideration of what must be learned to adapt these courts to contemporary notions of justice, and discussion of reforms that might advance these courts toward models that best serve their rural constituencies.
