| Description | This chapter explores the possibility of using secret police archives as a source for scholarly research on religious minorities in the former Yugoslavia. Unlike in other Eastern European countries, access to the secret police archives in the former Yugoslavia is still very limited: a public debate on openness is ongoing and thus far has been inconclusive. The fall of communism and the break-up of Yugoslavia presented new opportunities for research into religions. However, the available studies on the Yugoslavian religious landscape rarely cover issues related to religious minorities and state authorities. Being mostly of so-called neo-Protestant origin and less numerous than other confessional groups (Orthodox Christians, Catholics and Muslims), religious minorities have not been the main focus of scholarly research until recently. Based on archival and ethnographic research conducted in Serbia from 2009 onwards, I argue that the study of religious minorities represents a valuable lens through which to analyze relations between the state and religious groups during the communist period. This is especially true with regards to the pacifist Nazarenes and Seventh Day Adventists, who were strictly controlled by the state because of their international and transnational networks and missionary work. This chapter addresses the opportunities for archival research in the former Yugoslav Republics and the accessibility of state security archives and the holdings of other institutions (the Ministry of the Interior, the police, the judiciary/Ministry of Justice, and the Federal Commission for Religious Affairs).
