| Description | The duty to safeguard children and young people from harm, abuse and neglect is one held by all professionals in whatever discipline they work. The safeguarding agenda is largely underpinned by the Children Act (1989, 2004) and Working Together to Safeguarding Children (2018), the statutory framework which sets out the legislation relevant to safeguarding. Statutory guidance is issued by law and must be followed unless there is a good reason not to do so. A Think Family Approach considers the other agencies involved with the child and the family. What information do they hold? How does what is happening for other family members impact on the child and the family functioning? In this the voice of the child is paramount, and includes 16–17-year olds, who are legally still children. With looked after children it is important to consider the cumulative impact of transition and loss, including changes within their named professional network. Continuity of care is crucial where possible, and if change is unavoidable, it should be managed carefully and involve the child/young person at all stages.
