| Description | Who a client is, why they are coming to therapy, what happens to them in their life, what they know about therapy, and how they fit with the therapeutic interviewer all play a role in what happens during the therapy process. Each client has a different understanding of themselves, their problems, therapy, and the therapist. Therapeutic interviewers can take time in the beginning of the first interview to talk with a client to gain a sense of the client's expectations for self, the therapist, and therapy. They can then educate the client about the therapy process. This understanding also happens within a context of the client's motivation for change. Therapists can assess what level of motivation the client has for change and work based on the client's position rather than expecting all clients to be similar in their interactions during the therapeutic interview. This chapter provides an overview of clients, including their motivations for coming to therapy, the social stigma of help seeking, and the concept of readiness for change.
