| Description | Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT) is an integrative approach in the treatment of couple distress. EFT was initially established in the 1980s when behavioral interventions for couple treatment were continually being developed and studied. The beginning formulation of EFT sought to address the lack of validated couple treatments with more focus on humanistic approaches rather than behavioral interventions. In addition to findings from EFT clinical trial research, findings from EFT process research show support for the model's theory of change, reveal therapy factors predictive of successful outcomes, and inform clinicians in treating couple distress. EFT is particularly appropriate for working with couples because its application of attachment theory for understanding and intervening in adult intimate relationships. The chapter examines the EFT approach to problem formulation and problem resolution using the case of the Johnsons. Systemically, EFT conceptualizes couple distress as an interactional pattern composed of partners' secondary emotional responses.
