| Description | Klein saw splitting as one of the earliest defensive operations called into play by the immature ego in an attempt to cope with intense anxieties to which it was at times subjected. Klein saw projection as a way the ego had of dealing with anxiety by ridding itself of danger and badness the psychic equivalent of expelling dangerous substances from the body. A patient, Mr. A, portrayed Feldman Michael, in his mind, as confused, embarrassed, and, moreover, unable to face the muddle which klein had created, sending someone else to deal with it on my behalf. It was evident that what were projected, in his phantasy, into him and taken as real properties of my mind at that time, was not the whole of the patient's mental contents. Finally Michael like to mention the fact that, with this patient in the situation Michael have described, the projective identification seemed to have been 'flexible' or 'fluid'.
