| Description | This chapter will consider the contributions made to the development of early Brazilian sound cinema by four pioneering individuals, two men, Adhemar Gonzaga and Humberto Mauro, and two women, Carmen Santos and Gilda de Abreu, who played pivotal roles within the embryonic medium in the face of considerable practical constraints. In spite of their undeniable contributions against all odds, it is only Gonzaga and Mauro's careers that have merited extensive scholarly analysis. In contrast, only one slim volume has been published on Santos,2and Abreu is the subject of a handful of academic essays, in spite of the fact that she directed one of the most commercially successful Brazilian feature films of all time. Both Santos and Abreu were film actresses prior to their directorial debuts, moving from passive to active relationships with the camera in contravention of patriarchal norms. Both women were modest about their achievements but displayed a courageous determination to try their hand at directing. As Abreu stated in interview in 1978: 'It is funny, but I didn't understand anything about cinema. I liked it but didn't understand it. And I still don't understand it, even today. Cinema is very complex. So I just did it out of cheek.'3 Book Name: Brazilian National Cinema |
