| Description | Today London's Notting Hill Carnival is considered the largest street theatre event inEurope. It is a calendrical carnival, taking place yearly on the Bank Holiday weekend(the last Sunday/Monday in August). The outdoor street procession, food stalls andthe numerous static sound systems that are nestled within the carnival route thatcirculates through Notting Hill in west London are a testament to the energy andcommitment of Claudia Jones, a political activist and writer, who founded theCaribbean Carnival Committee in November 1958. Jones, who also launched thefirst black newspaper in Britain, The West Indian Gazette, organized the first carnivalin response to the racist intimidation and violence from white youths against WestIndians that escalated in the summer of 1958.
