| Description | Current research activities in 3D geographical information systems (GIS) focus on spatial analysis as well as modelling and representing 3D objects and associated topological relationships. This chapter presents the research methodology for identifying a set of requirements for 3D visualisation and animation in GIS. It discusses the developed proposed system in an iterative process, at each step evaluating the preliminary results with respect to these requirements. The chapter describes in more detail the tasks typically performed by different types of model generators, as well as how new GIS data formats or model generators can be added to the integrator without recompiling any code. An import mechanism has been developed where a new model generator can be added to the system by entering the name of a model generator description file. The chapter describes GIS-oriented tools for designing an animation sequence, that is, tools for controlling virtual camera motion and synchronising dynamic scene components.
