| Description | Resilience has become a new buzzword in the lexicon of tourism studies. Whereas at one time seemingly everything had to be sustainable, now everything has to be resilient as well! Undoubtedly, the notion of resilience shares a number of significant characteristics with the concept of sustainability. First, there are overlaps between the concepts with respect to the management and maintenance of ecological and social systems. However, while related they are different. Sustainability and resilience are not identical concepts and cannot be substituted for each other (Hall, Prayag, & Amore, 2018). Xu, Marinova, and Guo (2015), for example, argue that the main difference is that resilience thinking does not emphasize the long-term time dimension and equity, whereas intergenerational equity is the core concept of sustainability. Nevertheless, strong definitions of sustainable development that emphasize that stocks of natural capital need to be maintained at or above existing threshold levels require sufficiently resilient socio-ecosystems in order to endure external perturbations and pressures (Ruiz-Ballesteros, 2011). Second, both resilience and sustainability are a 'boundary object' (Brand & Jax, 2007) or 'bridging concept' (Beichler, Hasibovic, Davidse, & Deppisch, 2014), which allows different disciplinary perspectives and knowledge domains of stakeholders, including business and public policy, to interface with each other and find common ground.
