| Description | Results of hill pasture management trials on the Te Awa research area between 1959 and 1969 are presented. Effects of different combinations of fertiliser treatment and stocking rate on pasture and animal performance were measured. Heavy topdressing with superphosphate gave satisfactory returns only when stocking rates were high enough to ensure full utilisation of increased pasture growth. Some cattle grazing was necessary to control coarse weeds, even with heaviest sheep stocking. At high stocking rates, yields of animal products were lower per ewe but higher per hectare than at lower rates. Productivity rose with stocking rate up to an optimum rate of about 12.4 ewes per ha plus 2.4 ewe equivalents in cattle, beyond which higher production v/as offset by problems of animal thrift, rapid tooth wear, low lambing percentages and weaning weights, and excessive pugging and opening up of pastures. Seasonal and annual fluctuations in pasture production made supplementary feeding necessary at the highest stocking rate, 17.3 ewes per ha. |
