| Description | Lundin (1973, cited in Astrand and Rodahl, 1986) reported that elite table tennis players have a very good base of exercise fitness. Laboratory based VO2max tests were conducted on seven elite Swedish players which gave a mean value of 65 ml.kg-1.min-1. Laboratory based tests on elite senior England players have also demonstrated the high level of endurance fitness that table tennis players possess with VO2max results comparing favourably with elite performers from other sports that require high levels of endurance fitness (Houghton, 1987). Laboratory based measures are effective in assessing a player's general aerobic fitness level, although such measures are not specific to the sport of table tennis and thus do not reflect the demands of the game (Ellwood, 1992). Therefore there is a need to develop tests that are specific to the demands of the sport being tested. Such tests should reflect both the physiological and the technical demands of the sport in order to give a more accurate measure of a player's fitness for the sport. Sportspecific fitness tests in racket based sports have been developed in both squash (Chin, Steininger, So, Clark & Wong, 1995) and badminton (Chin, Wong, So, Siu, Steininger & Los, 1995; Hughes & Fullerton, 1995). To date, no endurance sportspecific field based fitness test exists for table tennis. Book Name: Science and Racket Sports II |
