| Description | This chapter analyses how the question of usury was confronted in Germany at the beginning of the sixteenth century, underlining the differences with respect to the Italian case. In Southern German states, the legitimacy of some forms of interest payment was championed by Johann Eck, Catholic theologian at the university of Ingolstadt, a protegee of the Fugger family and the starkest opponent of Luther. His ideas, accepted in Italian circles, would be refuted in Germany, also by famed humanists, in consequence of the widespread hatred toward a Roman Church perceived as oppressive and corrupt. In Italy, in contrast, the long-standing tradition of independence of cities and local communities from the control of the church favoured a compromise. In Florence, the holy alliance between monastic orders and the Medici family, praised by humanists, would thus lead to a Renaissance instead of a Reformation.
