| Description | Particular sectors of the university student population may present specific areas of learning difficulties, the types of problem being a reflection of the definition of each student type. Overseas students meet a cultural and linguistic barrier as well as alien concepts such as competitive indecision and the pressure to work independently in academic isolation. The various categories of students with special needs have been arbitrarily divided, but in reality they may overlap. Overseas students are of course generally mature students and often suffer both disabilities. They all suffer some social isolation caused by their handicap. This lack of close staff/student or inter-student relationships affects learning competence so that provisions such as the English Conversation Scheme may have far-reaching effects. The conversation scheme is a way of facilitating inter-cultural communication between British and overseas students. It helps the overseas students' problems with dialect and colloquial English and, if the British students are on the same course, with their technical terminology.
