| Description | This chapter suggests that pedagogical practice and, more importantly, pedagogical conceptions are not necessarily changed by the use of online approaches. It is the teacher's pedagogical conception and not the technology that appears to be the principal variable affecting the nature and quality of teaching. An additional difficulty is that most reports on the effectiveness of online learning evaluate online learning in comparison with 'traditional' pedagogical practice. One of the features of the literature on online pedagogy is that, where pedagogical improvement on existing practice is claimed, the evidence base for the measurement of improvement is questionable. Evaluation of the Extended Learning Environment Network experience is at an early stage, and data on student approaches and levels of learning outcomes are not yet available. If the key to the development of effective online pedagogy is the development of effective pedagogical practice itself, then we can discern some possible routes for improving quality.
