| Description | Women still occupy only 25.1% of political positions in parliaments worldwide.$ ^{1}$ In the 49 countries of sub-Saharan Africa, approximately 73% of women believe domestic violence by a partner is warranted, and 21% of women are married as children.$ ^{2}$ Perpetuating extreme gendered social norms, boys are still recruited as child soldiers and sent out to men who exude toxic masculinity.$ ^{3}$ Measured by the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 indicators, the pace of achieving equality remains arduous because of constraining social norms and the lack of institutional capacity, political will, insufficient financing, and conflicting regulations. Renewed effort and strengthening collaborations between state and non-state actors, including the general public are essential to fast-tracking SDG 5 success.
