| Description | This chapter examines the Abingdon Plantation site at Washington, DC's Ronald Reagan National Airport. The airport sits on land that was once a 1,000-acre plantation. Archeological work at the site uncovered items that are displayed in the terminal. The ruins of Abingdon were preserved and today open to tourists who venture the short walk from the main terminal. Abingdon Plantation is a public history resource with great potential that has yet to be fully realized; nowhere at this National Park site is there any mention of slavery or the enslaved people who lived there. This chapter queries what has been accomplished at this site and what work remains to be done. Book Name: Traces and Memories of Slavery in the Atlantic World |
