| Description | Supramolecular polymers are linear chains of low molecular weight monomers held together by reversible and highly directional noncovalent interactions (Figure 13.1). Because of their macromolecular architecture, they display polymerlike properties both in solution and in the bulk. This concept has been developed in the last 15 years, mainly by chemists with the ambition to bring new properties and new functions to the field of polymer science. Although the analogy between supramolecular polymers and wormlike micelles is obvious, there has been little cross-fertilization between the two fields. (The most notable exception being the early recognition that the theoretical framework developed for wormlike micelles described rather well the rheological properties of supramolecular $polymers.^{ 1 }$) Thus, in this book devoted to wormlike micelles, my aim is to stress the similarities and specificities of supramolecular polymers in comparison to wormlike micelles. Given that excellent reviews on supramolecular polymers already $exist,^{ 2-6 }$ I have chosen not to give an exhaustive description, but rather to focus on hydrogen bonded systems which have been characterized in solution, with the hope that this will both constitute a coherent subset and afford an easy comparison with wormlike micelles. The first two parts of this contribution are devoted to two specific systems which have been the most thoroughly characterized by rheology in solution.
