| Description | A brilliant young academic had been in analysis for a long time. Recently, it seemed that the analysis was coming to an end: he was able to speak about the termination. The patient was able to see how much his mother's sudden disarray had laid the neurotic foundations of an impossible challenge in him: saving women from their depression. In his later life, he had often felt called upon to give back the taste for living to depressed women. It was after having experienced this movement acutely in the transference that something of this singular position of the dead mother and of the seduction that she exerts could be elaborated and then renounced. The suddenness of the withdrawal of cathexis, in addition to the material presence of the object, form an obstacle to the elaboration of a “depressive position” of quality.
