| Description | The Immigrant Stories Project is an ongoing series of interactive, bilingual theater performances with audiences of immigrants from Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Peru, Argentina, Ecuador, Belize, Paraguay, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic. All live in the Mid-Hudson Valley of New York, a semi-rural region that has seen successive waves of immigration since the first Dutch and Huguenot settlers in the 1600s. Like many of their predecessors, recent immigrants have come here in desperation and hope, fleeing poverty that is a tragic outcome of history and politics in which the United States has played a significant part—most recently, with the impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) which has led to millions of farmers losing their land. With no way of supporting their families, it is inevitable that many people look toward the great wealth and apparent opportunities just across the border.
