| Description | It is stated that an approach to Education for Sustainability (EFS) that encourages, curiosity, innovation, whole systems thinking and a values-based approach is needed to drive the transformational and transgressive changes necessary to address our unprecedented global problems. Clearly, any application of sustainability literacy needs to be very carefully considered within the specific educational context. In this chapter Lorna Davies, Niki Harré and Kelly Kara propose that an epistemological and ontological approach to sustainability focused on professional understanding and identity, may assist student midwives in applying the environmental, sociocultural and economic tenets of sustainability to midwifery practice and maternity services. The chapter introduces a unique strategy to engage students with EFS by using a values-based approach, thus aligning sustainability principles with the professional context of midwifery.
