| Abstract | In the period immediately after the Second World War when there was an understandable emphasis on rebuilding domestic life after the separations and upheavals of war, attention was particularly focused on the mother and the quality of her relations with her children. In a monograph written for the World Health Organization, John Bowlby made the rather startling claim that a satisfactory mother-child relationship was essential for adult mental health (Bowlby 1951; see also Bretherton and Waters (1985) for a more recent discussion of this theoretical position), and the scene was set for a long and active period of research on these issues. Despite remaining areas of ignorance and continuing debates about the interpretation of evidence and theoretical issues, some broad principles seem clear. Some childhood experiences can have both immediate and long-term consequences for some children. While some of the most consistent and powerful effects result from disruptions of mother-child relationships, a whole range of upheavals of social relationships and in domestic life have been shown to have consequences at least for some children in some circumstances. Effects cannot be attributed to a single process: while some may result directly from a break in one of the parent-child relationships, others may stem from associated features of changing domesticcircumstances – the poverty that may follow divorce, for example, or the frequent changes of school and breaks in childhood friendships that may accompany parental unemployment and homelessness. Psychological factors may be very important too. A child’s feeling of self-esteem, which may be closely linked to a number of aspects of development, seems to be very much a product of the quality of a child’s relationship with those in the immediate family and social network and their understanding of the reasons for domestic changes and the actions of others who are socially important to them. If, for instance, a parent walks out of a marriage, a child may feel very rejected and self-esteem can plummet. But a father who leaves home for a job that a child may see in positive terms may have quite the contrary effect. |
