| Description | States do not operate without being able to communicate that they are operating. To make populations believe in states and, perhaps, even identify with them, it is necessary that they be visible – that they project an image, a surface of themselves that is recognizable. This chapter opens the volume by looking at the changing central images and principles of statehood across its diverse forms in the twentieth century, ranging from imperial monarchies, brand-new nation states claiming to be age-old ones, fascist royal dictatorships, the states of state socialism, and the neo-liberal capitalist democracies after 1989. Following a theoretical introduction drawing on recent scholarship in cultural history, different architectural styles in central state buildings and their changing meaning over time will be discussed; and pivotal sites of statehood, such as palaces or parliament buildings, and their significance will be analyzed.
