| Description | Success in a creative endeavour does a lot to bolster the self-image, so creative successes are good for remedial readers. Remedial reading teachers are succeeding in adding the extras by using some of the educationally sound approaches with their classes. They are: branched fiction for choices in plot direction, vocabulary scavenger hunts for word study, pantomime and creative dramatics for involvement in stories and tape recordings for book reports. Branching has a different purpose in fictional books — a somewhat recreational purpose — quite similar to the purpose in microcomputer programs. Branched books allow readers to determine the direction of the plot. This chapter discusses the assumptions of the language experience approach are: what students can think, they can say; what they can say, they can write or dictate; and what they can write they can read. The opinion poll technique promotes more student involvement and less talking by the teacher. It offers remedial readers a good chance to participate. Book Name: Intervention with Children |
