| Description | Television has a profound impact on the American political system. It has contributed to changing the character of political campaigns and weakening political parties. It has altered the way government leaders communicate to people as well as the way interest groups appeal for public support. Without television, much of the American political system would be the same. Presidents would still have to use techniques of mass persuasion to win people to their programs. Public policy matters would still be fought out on the basis of competing interests, with each group using vehicles of mass communication. Television has had an impact on the American political system, critics of television have exaggerated that influence. Political parties traditionally have been vital to democracy. The chapter considers the relationship between television and political participation, specifically in turning out to vote and in engaging in other political activities. The controversial example of the relationship between foreign policy and television was coverage of the Vietnam War. Book Name: What if the American Political System Were Different? |
