| Description | Of all the innovations introduced to the Pacific Islands since the time of initial contact, perhaps none has had greater or more lasting social impact than introduced languages, particularly during the period since the end of World War II. This chapter describes some of the dimensions of that impact. The government language represented status and power, since it was used in its written form to formulate laws, treaties, agreements, certificates, edicts, and regulations, all of which impacted directly on the lives of the governed. A significant social change resulting from the increased reliance on literacy was the shift from subsistence to wage economies. The new economic system, based on the exchange of paper money, required a literate workforce to perform the requisite functions of writing, typing, filing, counting, teaching, and so forth. Finally, there is the matter of social changes that stem from changes in the way people structure their thoughts. Book Name: Social Change in the Pacific Islands |
