| Description | In order to explore fully the constructions of the notions of appropriateness and value within the chanson francaise and the canzone d'autore, it is useful to locate these two genres within the wider framework of popular music studies in the French, Italian and anglophone contexts. The chapter establishes the complex and problematic natures of both chanson and the canzone d'autore and begins to trace the functions of the multifaceted discourse of these genres. Jachia explains that: Jachia is alluding to the specificity of the terms canzone d'autore and cantautore and suggests that the implied significance of these two terms is bound up in notions of authority, quality and literariness. The notions of poetry and innovation are used to indicate quality in the canzone d'autore.
