| Description | This chapter employs a cultural studies framework and interdisciplinary feminist analytical approach to interrogate race and gender in sports that are linked to material and ideological relations of power. It demonstrates the contemporary categories of analysis in sport as subjectively built upon precepts of racialized and gendered ideals in society. The chapter explores the importance of agency among athletes of colour in a social world perpetuating the ideology that 'white is right' against challenges to the very foundation of this paradigm. The entry of black athletes into previously segregated sports initially unlocked a dialogue on race representation and embodiment in postcolonial Africa, Caribbean, and Europe. In these societies, exclusion from sport was tied to race, but the independence era and end of apartheid, as well as the Second World War, resulted in the entry of 'coloured' men in societal institutions, including sport. Sport is considered a male-centred, male-dominated, and male-identified domain in masculine hegemony, patriarchy, and domination are core tenets.
